Jorg Haider’s resignation as leader of Austria’s anti-immigrant Freedom Party is widely seen as a ploy aimed at helping him become chancellor in the future. “Haider’s influence remains,” said Marta Halpert, director of the Anti- Defamation League’s Vienna-based European office. In his resignation speech, Haider made it clear that “this is not a withdrawal from politics.”
