A contribution of $600,000 cash to poor families of Zeline, Czechoslovakia, the town of his birth, and provision for founding a hospital and synagogue there were among the charitable enterprises of Joseph Deutsch, a furniture merchant, during his recent four months’ trip to Europe, he informed more than 200 of his employes at a dinner in his honor last night at the Hotel Biltmore. Mr. Deutsch, said he regarded conditions in Germany with optimism.
Employes of the chain of stores conducted by Mr. Deutsch and his brother, Adolph Deutsch, gave the dinner in the former’s honor. Joseph Deutsch came to New York in 1887 at the age of 12. Hard work and thriftiness gained him success in the furniture business, he said, though he was pehniless when he first came here.
