A banquet and Purim ball Sunday at the Lord Baltimore Hotel, brought to a close the annual two-day convention of the Fifth District, Independent Order of B’nai B’rith. The district consists of Maryland, the District of Columbia, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia and Florida.
At the business sessions yesterday, officers were elected and appointments made of representatives to the Constitutional Lodge, governing body of the International Order of B’nai B’rith, and to the Fifth District general committee.
Joseph Fromberg, of Charleston, S. C., was reelected president, as were the other officers with one exception. Simon E. Sobeloff, Deputy City Solicitor of Baltimore, was chosen second vice-president, succeeding Nathan H. Saltzman, of Atlanta, Ga. Other officers are William A. Goodhart, Baltimore, first vice-president; Julius Reis, Washington, treasurer, and Edwin L. Levy, Richmond, secretary.
Sidney J. Stern, of Greensboro, N. C., was named chairman of the general committee, the other members being J. Lyon, Roanoke, Va.; A. Schefferman, Washington; Dr. Leon Banov, Charleston, S. C., and Louis Assinsky, Daytona Beach, Fla. The representatives to the Grand Lodge are Harry Alexander, Atlanta, Ga.; Joseph Wilner, Washington, and Mr. Stern.
It was announced at the convention yesterday that after four years of effort, a $250,000 tuberculosis sanatorium for Asheville, N. C., had become a reality. The sanatorium will be operated by the Fifth District.
