Chief Rabbi Joseph Haim Panigel, a native of Palestine who had been the spiritual leader of the Sephardic Community here since 1938, died yesterday at the age of 65 years. He was formerly chief rabbi at Baghdad and Jerusalem. He was also a lawyer and represented the Jews of Argentina at the World Jewish Congress at Atlantic City last year and was a General Zionist candidate for the forthcoming Congress.
Born in Jerusalem in 1882, Rabbi Panigel studied at Yeshivas in Palestine. He received his rabbinical diploma in the Seminary at Istanbul and a law degree at the university there. In 1910 he was chosen to represent Palestine Jews before the Turkish Government.
