Joseph Lieberman, Democratic presidential candidate Al Gore’s running mate, allayed the concerns of some black leaders by telling them he supports affirmative action. Civil rights leader Jesse Jackson told a cheering crowd at the Democratic convention that “Gore ended the quota of zero of Jewish Americans on the national ticket last week. This was a bold act of affirmative action.”
