Joseph Littau, musical director of the Roxy Theatre, will succeed Sandor Harmati as conductor of the Omaha Symphony Orchestra for the next season. The appointment of Mr. Littau to the post of conductor is one of the few outstanding indications where an American-born conductor has been engaged to conduct an American symphony orchestra.
Mr. Littau was born in New Jersey, and save for a year spent in Berlin where he studied under Marquadt, he is a thorough product of American education. He studied the piano under the guidance of Joseph Horodes, organ under Alfred D. Fohs, and theory with Mortimer Wilson, the American composer.
The new conductor of the Omaha Symphony Orchestra had served his apprenticeship in Roxy’s orchestra many years ago as a pianist, later as assistant conductor of the Boston Opera Company, and for a number of seasons at the St. Louis Majestic Theatre. Within recent years his broadcasting over the radio has done considerable towards introducing standard symphonic works to radio audiences.
