Funeral services were held today for Joseph Shapiro, a leading Orthodox layman and philanthropist, who died here yesterday at the age of 69. Born in Horodok, Poland, he came to the United States and was active in the textile industry. He administered a $2,250,000 David and Esther Shapiro Free Loan Fund established by his parents.
He was a member of the national board of the Union of Orthodox Jewish Congregations, chairman of the presidium of the Mesifta Tifereth Jerusalem, treasurer of Torah Vodath; Yeshiva, treasurer of Torah Umesorah, the Society for Hebrew Day Schools and a vice president of the Lubavitcher Yeshiva.
