Deputy Joseph Vaszony, former cabinet member and leader of the liberal opposition, noted for his stand against the Bethlen government in the counterfeiting plot, was attacked today on his way to parliament.
He was hit over the head and seriously injured. His assailants, who were arrested, are members of the anti-Semitic organization, the Awakening Magyars, it was stated. They had in their possession firearms which they would have used had they not been prevented from doing so by passersby who disarmed them.
A stormy meeting took place in parliament, where the opposition introduced an interpellation concerning the matter. Count Bethlen, the Prime Minister, promised to take measures immediately to punish Vaszony’s assailants.
