Myer J. Block, Chief Judge of the Orphans’ Court of Baltimore for 29 years, died suddenly of heart disease Tuesday night. A few hours before his death Judge Block cast his vote.
Born in Baltimore 84 years ago, Judge Block spent most of his life here. He received his education in the public schools.
He was living in Richmond, Va., at the outbreak of the Civil War and served in the Seventeenth Virginia Infantry Following the war he joined the Fifth Regiment, Maryland National Guard, and at the time of his death was a member of the Fifth Regiment Veterans’ Corps.
Judge Block was a Democrat and his first political appointment was that of Supervisor of the Harbor Board. Later he entered the real estate business. Fifty-two years ago he was appointed clerk of the Orphans’ Court and later auditor. In 1898 he was elected associate judge, and a year later became chief judge. He was re-elected seven times by the voters of Baltimore.
He was a sergeant-at-arms at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago in 1896 which nominated William Jennings Bryan for President.
