Judge Henry E. Lewis, Justice of the Supreme Court of New York, Second District, will not consent to serve as the Republican candidate for Mayor of New York City, according to word received by Republican leaders from Oscar Lewis, a brother, and spokesman for the jurist, who is now in Europe.
Mr. Lewis declared that the Republican chances for defeating Mayor Walker were still too weak to justify his brother in sacrificing the remaining seven years of his term on the bench, and altering his original decision, which was not to run unless there were indications he had a chance of winning. Mr. Lewis said he would advise his brother not to run, in view of the situation, and that he had no doubt his advice would be followed. Republican leaders will make a last-minute attempt to have the Judge revise his decision.
