Judge Lewis Says Jews Have Lost Loyal Friend

Judge William M. Lewis, Grand Master of the Independent Order of Brith Sholom, and national chairman of the United Palestine Appeal, in a statement on the death of Lord Balfour, declared today: “It would be futile for me or for anyone of us to attempt to appraise the service which Lord Balfour has rendered to the cause of the upbuilding of Palestine and to the Jewish people generally. Deeply as we feel his worth, we are too close to the events that have transpired in recent years, events in which he took such a leading part, to appreciate their full import. This must be left to history. In his passing, the Jewish people the world over have lost not merely a loyal and steadfast friend, but one who understood and appreciated the spirit which has animated the Jewish people throughout the ages; that spirit which has given us uninterrupted continuity from antiquity to this day.”
