$35,000 Raised in Cleveland at Dinner Opening Campaign (Jewish Daily Bulletin)
Cleveland was the first city to launch its drive in the $7,500,000 United Palestine Appeal for this year. The sum of $35,000 was subscribed at the dinner on Sunday at the Statler Hotel, which marked the official launching of the United Palestine Appeal Campaign in Cleveland for $150,000. Judge Julian W. Mack was the principal speaker and made the initial contribution of $1,000.
In his address Judge Mack declared: “Palestine is not only a country in which our persecuted brethren from East European countries can find a sanctuary and can peacefully settle on the land, but it is also the land which inspires and creates the Jewish will to national rejuvenation and gives courage to our despairing people to reconstruct the land of their ancient glory.
“Because Cleveland is the first city in the country to float its campaign for the United Palestine Appeal which this year has for its objective the raising of $7,500,000 for the reconstruction of Palestine, the eyes of American Jewry are turned on it. The results of the Cleveland campaign will be closely watched by every other Jewish community in the country and it is inevitable that it will serve as a model to be followed by all other cities.”
Max Simon, chairman of the Cleveland Campaign also delivered an address and Rabbi Abba Hillel Silver was the toastmaster.
