The Honorable Max S. Levine, Judge of the Court of General Sessions, was elected President of the United Yeshivah Chest, a federation of Jewish parochial schools in Greater New York, at a meeting of a representative Council held yesterday at the Chest headquarters.
The Chest was organized for the purpose of aiding the work of the schools, known as Yeshivahs, having for their purpose the combination of secular studies with Jewish learning. The English departments of these schools are conducted in accordance with the standards of the New York elementary and secondary schools under the supervision of the New York Board of Education. The Hebrew departments are conducted on the basis of a curriculum which has the approval of the Orthodox rabbinate.
The eight schools composing the Chest have a total enrollment of approximately 5,000 children and a general annual budget of close to a million dollars. Most of the schools provide both elementary and secondary education for their pupils.
A large percentage of the children attending these schools are given tuition free. It will be the purpose of the Council to place the administration of the schools, which have been suffering lately from shortage of funds, on a sound budgetary basis and to coordinate the fund raising activities.
