Alfred E. Smith was hailed today as the “truest of friends and the best of citizens” in a statement issued on the occasion of his death by Judge Joseph M. Proskauer, president of the American Jewish Committee, and long-time friend and associate of the former Governor.
Judge Proskauer said, “Governor Smith was the best and wisest man I ever knew. In all my years of close association with him I never knew him to act except from the highest of motives. That is why he was the truest of friends and the greatest of citizens.
