United States District Judge Charles E. Wyzanski, Jr., a Jew who is one of the most prominent jurists in the country, will become chief judge of the U.S. District Court for Massachusetts next month, it was reported here today. Judge Wyzanski is next in line for the chief judgeship as successor to Chief Judge George G. Sweeney, who will reach the mandatory retirement of 70 on July 23.
On the federal bench here since 1942, Judge Wyzanski is also an author of renown, having published several books and having contributed many articles to well-known magazines. He has also lectured at Harvard and at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Among the non-judicial posts he has held was the chairmanship of the Board of Overseas of Harvard University, the only Jew ever to hold that position. Judge Wyzanski was the principal speaker at one of the annual dinners of the American Jewish Committee.
