Brig. General Julius Klein, who after World War II commanded the 109th AAA Brigade ING, the only Illinois National Guard Unit to see active service in Korea, retired from the Illinois National Guard today after his promotion to Major General of the Line (Ret.)
Gen. Klein held an active Federal post as Brigadier General of the Line through commission in the Illinois National Guard for several years. Upon his retirement from the Illinois National Guard by present Department of Army regulations, he is automatically transferred to the Organized Reserve and directed to report to the Commander of the Illinois Military District for assignment.
Gen. Klein started many years ago as a private in the National Guard and had an outstanding World War II combat record in the Pacific where he served under General Douglas MacArthur and Admirals Halsey and Nimitz. He commanded 10,000 troops in the Pacific. He has been the recipient of many decorations and citations, including the Soldier’s Medal for heroism, Legion of Merit with clusters, Philippine Distinguished Service Star, French Legion of Honor, and others.
