The appointment of Julius Lomnitz, veteran community worker, to head the current activities of the Joint Distribution Committee in youth and Central America, succeeding Jacob B. Lightman in that position, was announced today by Moses A. Leavitt, executive vice-chairman of the J.D.C.
Mr. Lightman, for six years J.D.C. director for Latin America, will leave the J.D.C. on April 17 to become European office director for the American Jewish Committee. “During the years Mr. Lightman served the J.D.C. we were able to bring nearly 10,000 Jewish refugees from post-war Europe to new homes in Latin America. Much of the success of this important resettlement work is owed to Mr. Lightman’s efforts,” Mr. Leavitt said.
Mr. Lomnitz will direct all J.D.C. campaign efforts in the 23 countries south of the Rio Grande, serving as J.D.C. director of fund raising for Latin America, Mr. Leavitt stated. Mr. Lomnitz’ title, Mr. Leavitt indicated, reflects the recent decision of the J.D.C.’s policy-making Latin-American committee to limit all present J.D.C. activities in Central and South America to fund-raising. Under Mr, Lomnitz’ ##irection, the J.D.C. will seek to raise $1,000,000 in 1950.
