The Negro citizens of the United States have on their own initiative formed a committee to consider ways and means of commemorating the memory of Mr. Julius Rosenwald, as a tribute to his interest in the welfare and advancement of the Negro population and his immense gifts towards Negro education and housing.

The general press throughout the country, headed by the “New York Times”, is giving pages to-day to Mr. Rosenwald, describing him as the “captain of philanthropists”. Most of them have devoted their first editorials to his passing, and print tributes to his memory which are pouring into all newspaper offices from people all over the United States who had contacts with him or benefited by his generosity.

The American Jewish Committee, of which Mr. Rosenwald was Vice-President, and the Joint Distribution Committee of America, of which he was a member of the Executive, held special meetings to-day at which they adopted resolutions reconding their sense of grief at his loss.

Mr. Rosenwald has been a generous friend and benefactor of the American negroes, especially in the encouragement of rural education among the Negro population of the South of the United States. There are over 4,000 such Rosenwald schools in the four teen States of the South, representing an investment of over 20 million dollars.

Mr. Julius Rosenwald also erected in Chicago a model apartment building for 300 negro families, representing an investment of 2½ million dollars and covering an entire city block. It is said to be the second largest of its kind in the world, surpassed only by the Paul Lawrence Dunbar Apartments for Negroes in the Harlem district of New York, which was erected by Mr. John D. Rockefeller, Jnr.

Mr. Rosenwald’s work on behalf of the Negro earned him the double hostility of the German Hitlerists who hate both Jews and coloured people, and the “Voelkischer Beobachter”, a long front-page article headed “Jewish-Negro Army”, with the sub-title “Julius Rosenwald spends twenty million dollars on Negro children”, asserting that “the purpose of Rosenwald’s contribution towards Negro education is to create a Negro army to protect Jewish interests in the event of the 100 per cent. Americans attempting to liberate themselves from the dictatorship of Jewish capital”. There are 350,000 Negro children in America obtaining their education through the Rosenwald Fund, it said, and they are all being trained to be of service to the Jews.
