The omission from the statement on atrocities in the Moscow pact of reference to the Jews as among the victims of Nazi mass executions was deplored here today by Naomi Chertoff of New York, national president of Junior Hadassah, the Young Women’s Zionist Organization of America, at the opening session of the group’s twentieth annual convention in the Hotel Statler.
Speaking to 500 delegates from 42 states, Miss Chertoff referred to “the torture, starvation and massacre of millions of Jews in Nazi-controlled lands” and said it was ” incomprehensible that in a clear and forceful warning to punish the perpetrators of cruelties against peoples in lands occupied by the Nazis, the great powers should have overlooked the Jews, who have been and are being murdered not as nationals of this or that land but solely as Jews.”
At a mass meeting this evening the delegates adopted a resolution condemning the British White Paper on Palestine as “legally and morally indefensible” and as a contradiction and violation of the Balfour Declaration. The meeting, at which representatives of twenty national and local youth organizations were guests, was dedicated to the fighting youth of the underground movements in Europe. The adoption of the resolution followed an address by Dr. Abba Hillal Silver, of Cleveland, cochairman of the American Zionist Emergency Council.
