West Germany’s new Minister of Justice is concerned over the detrimental effects the ultra right-wing National Democratic Party (NPD) may have on Germany’s image abroad but he does not believe it constitutes a danger at home. Replying in the Bundestag to questions about possible Government action to ban the party as anti-democratic, Horsi Ehmke said that from a foreign policy point of view, the reputedly neo-Nazi NPD could harm Germany, especially if it won seats in the Bundestag in the forthcoming national election. He said that an electoral victory would give NPD members a forum for inflammatory speeches that would be quoted abroad and reflect badly on the Federal Republic.
