A juvenile court here let five young Germans off with a reprimand after ordering them to apologize to the Jewish community for overturning tombstones in the Jewish cemetery a year ago.
The defendants pleaded not guilty, several asserting that they entered the cemetery only to chase out some children who were playing there. One insisted that he want there to read the Hebrew inscriptions on the stones.
Five Germans formerly employed by the municipal government of Bamberg have been arrested on charges of desecrating a local Jewish cemetery. The five were said to have dug up the remains of Jewish dead in order to remove gold-filled dentures.
