A synagogue corps to provide security for Jews who still live in the inner cities of major urban areas has been established by the Jewish War Veterans. According to Albert Schlossberg of Milton, Mass., the JWV national commander, the formation of the new organization was the result of the “increasing number of attacks on Jews and synagogue property in those areas of the inner city where there are no longer any middle class Jewish families.” In most inner cities of large urban areas Mr. Schlossberg said, “all that is left of the Jewish community are aged Orthodox Jews whose lives revolve around their synagogue and who have neither the funds nor the inclination to leave lifetime homes. These people have often been subject to brutal attacks by hoodlums who prey on their weakness. Often, their synagogues are vandalized and their homes terrorized.” He added that among the organizations’ responsibilities will be to attend Saturday and holiday services and “by their presence, afford a feeling of security to the older people who make up these congregations.” Under the program adopted, JWV Posts will be asked to “adopt” a synagogue and set up a duty roster for their membership. Members also will be in readiness to assist in any manner that “will contribute to the well being and security of the people in the inner city.”
