Jewish Defense League leader Rabbi Meir Kahane is entering his fourth week in custody without having been presented with the evidence available against him.
Kahane Friday lodged an appeal against his continued detention. State Attorney General Gabriel Bach explained that the police investigation in the case was continuing in Israel and abroad and that Kahane’s release might hinder its progress. The court will rule on Kahane’s appeal next week.
The JDL leader was remanded three weeks ago in connection with sending of what was described as racial incitement letters to Arab citizens in Israel urging them to leave the country. He was released four days later but immediately redetained on suspicion of conspiring to persuade people in the U.S. to commit acts of violence against foreign diplomats.
Details of State evidence against Kahane were not revealed to Kahane’s lawyer nor made public after the judge agreed with the State Attorney that this might prejudice the police investigation.
