The Kaiser-Frazer automobile assembly plant in Haifa will close down for at least six weeks as a result of the cancellation by the French Renault Company of its contract to supply the Israel firm with assembly parts, it was reported here today.
The Haifa plant, which was taken by surprise when the French firm announced its decision last month to sever connections with Israel due to Arab pressure, found itself also without parts for American Willys cars, which are also assembled here. Plant executives decided to close down until a new consignment of parts arrives here.
Kaiser-Frazer director Ephraim Illin, meanwhile, is reported making extensive efforts to realize his intention of producing Israel-made cars and plans are said to be progressing.
