About 200 new members joined the ranks of the Chicago Branch of the American Jewish Congress at a meeting held at the Covenant Club. More than 1,000 men and women representing various Jewish organizations and points of view heard addresses by Professor Horace M. Kallen, Dr. Horace J. Bridges and Rabbi Samuel M. Blumenfield.

In his address, “The Assault Upon Democracy,” Dr. Kallen said “the Jews have a stake in defending the strueture of modern civilization, against the assault of a medieval movement whose center is in Germany. That is why we call upon you all to stand up and be counted by enrolling in the American Jewish Congress and cooperating in the work of enlightenment and of the defense of the democratic principle which is the American principle.” Sigmund W. David, chairman of the Chicago Committee of the American Jewish Congress, presided.
