Despite a protest from Jewish leaders and liberals, the German cruiser Karlsruhe arrived here yesterday and was accorded an official municipal welcome. Representatives of Governor Joseph B. Ely were among those attending the reception in an official capacity.
Spokesmen for state and local officials pointed out that international amenities demanded such a welcome for the Karlsruhe, which is a training ship for embryo officers of the German Navy.
Leading the protest were Rabbi Samuel J. Abrams, Samuel B. Finkel, Albert A. Mallinger, Professor Henry Wadsworth Longfellow Dana, Professor Colston E. Warne and Samuel Kelesky.
The Karlsruhe will remain here for ten days.
