Edward Keith-Roach, governor of the Jerusalem district will either leave Palestine entirely or be transferred to the governorship of northern Palestine, it became known in London. J. E. F. Campbell, governor of the Jaffa district, is expected to succeed Keith-Roach as governor of Jerusalem as well as of all southern Palestine.
If Keith-Roach is displaced it will be a further step in the reorganization of the Palestine administration. Last year Harry Charles Luke, chief secretary of Palestine and acting High Commissioner during the riots of 1929 was replaced by Mark Aitchinson Young, Luke becoming chief secretary of Malta. High Commissioner Chancellor’s resignation becomes effective November 1 and General Arthur Grenfell Wauchope, commander of northern Ireland, has been named High Commissioner.
In the event that Keith-Roach is transferred to a post in some other part of the British Empire, Palestine Jewry will shed no tears of regret. It was on his orders that the British police forcibly removed the screen separating men and women worshippers at the Wailing Wall during the Yom Kippur services in 1928. The incident aroused worldwide Jewish protest.
