Kennedy to Nominate Chicago Jewish Lawyer As Envoy to United Nations

President Kennedy announced today his intention to nominate Sidney R. Yates, Chicago Jewish lawyer, as United States representative to the United Nations Trusteeship Council, with the rank of Ambassador.

Born in Chicago in 1909, Mr. Yates was educated in public schools there and graduated in 1931 from University of Chicago and from University of Chicago Law School in 1933. He served in the U. S. Navy in World War II and was elected to Congress from the 9th Congressional District of Illinois in 1948 as nominee of the Democratic Party. He was later re-elected to six succeeding Congresses.
