Ambassador Chester Bowles, former Connecticut Governor who is now President Kennedy’s advisor on Asian, African and Latin-American affairs, said here that the Arab countries must recognize that “Israel was here to stay.”
He made this statement to the Connecticut Jewish Ledger during a visit here. He emphasized that he remained firmly committed to his statement of October 1960, when, as foreign policy advisor to John F. Kennedy as a presidential candidate, he took that position.
He also expressed the opinion that in such situations as the Middle East impasse, it might be best to put the conflict “on ice” and find other ways to get the two sides to work together. He explained that if agreements could be reached on such issues as the Arab refugees and use of water in the area, the way might be opened to eventual peace.
