Kept Yiddish Book, Tailor Can’t Collect

Bookkeeping conducted in Yiddish is not acceptable in British courts as evidence, Judge Spencer Hogg ruled here today in the case of a Jewish tailor, Louis Simmons.

Mr. Simmons sued W. Edwards Read, an insurance clerk. He claimed that the defendant ordered a suit, an overcoat and other clothing in 1930 and still owes him a balance of £12. Asked to produce a book, Mr. Simmons opened his from the back, explaining that he keeps his books in Yiddish.

“This is not much good to me,” the Judge remarked, issuing the verdict in favor of the defendant.
