With James Rothschild, Chief Rabbi Hertz, Sir Alfred Mond and Philip Snowden, British Labor party leader as the chief speakers, the campaign for the keren Hayesod was opened at a big banquet at the Central Hotel here.
“Everything worth while in Palestine is the result of Jewish activity there”, Sir Alfred Mond declared. “Without Jewish work there Palestine would not deserve a second glance.” Rothschild spoke enthusiastically of the work of the “Chaluzim” whom he had often witnessed, he said, building roads, laying the foundations for cities and engaged in other forms of pioneer work.
The presence at the same dinner table of Philip Snowden, the mover of the socialist resolution in the House of Commons last week, and Sir Alfred, its bitterest antagonist, occasioned many witty remarks by several of the speakers.
