Jewish sources in the Soviet Union reported today that the Supreme Court of the Russian Republic has rejected the appeal of Yankel Khantsis following a closed hearing. Khantsis, who comes from Kishinev, was arrested in Kirov last Jan, and imprisoned for seven months before he went to trial on charges of “slandering” the Soviet Union. He was sentenced last month to two years’ imprisonment. He is said to be in poor health.
The sources reported that Silva Zalmanson Kuznetsov, one of the original Leningrad trial defendants who has been confined to the Potma forced labor camp for the past two years, is seriously ill. She has been deprived of visiting privileges following six months in solitary confinement. Fifty-three Moscow Jews have sent a letter to Soviet authorities appealing for her release.
