The Knesset, Israel’s Parliament, today approved a special bill permitting Finance Minister Levi Eshkol to take a $13,000,000 loan from Israel banks for security purposes. Even the right-wing Herut party, which is critical of Israel Government financial procedures, approved the loan.
The Knesset action coincided with reports received here that Soviet Premier Khrushchev sent a special plane to bring the United Arab Republic Vice President and chief military commander, Field Marshal Abdel Hakim Amer, and his entourage from Cairo to Moscow.
Although the subject of Marshal Amer’s second mission to Moscow has not been disclosed, either by the UAR or the Soviet Union, it has been reported that the UAR seeks replacements for its aging acquisitions of 1956 weapons, including the new Soviet MIG-19 jet fighter plane.
It was reported also that the UAR will sell its surplus and outdated Soviet weapons to other African countries. The first was reported to be Sudan, which has already received six MIG-17s from the UAR. The UAB was expected to receive three more Soviet submarines, which would bring its total of such undersea craft to twelve.
