Barnett Burke, Jewish A.R.P. warden, today received the British Empire Medal from the hands of King George, for exceptional gallantry under severe bombing. In conferring the decoration on Burke, who had extricated five persons caught in the basement of a bakery struck by a high explosive bomb, the King said: “It is a job well done.” Mr. Burke is the first Marylebone man to receive this award.
The heroism of another London A.R.P. worker, Florence Emanuel, sixty year old Jewish widow, was praised by Lady Violet Bonham Carter speaking at Leeds. Lady Violet cited the fortitude displayed by Mrs. Emanuel in staying at the switchboard of an A.R.P. post for seven hours, although she was in an extreme danger.
