King George VI made reference to racial conflict in two of his speeches yesterday.
In his Empire Day broadcast, the King said: “The sense of race may be a dangerous and disruptive force, but English and French have shown in Canada that they can keep the pride and distinctive culture which it inspires, while yet combining to establish a broader freedom and security than either could have accomplished alone.”
In his reply to the greeting by the Premier of Manitoba, King George said: “The poeple of Manitoba, having united many races in a common citizenship, may well be proud that the practice of tolerance and democratic principles has borne such splendid fruit.”
