President Eisenhower has received a personal message from Arabian King Saud reasserting an intention to prohibit Israeli shipping in the Strait of Tiran and protesting what the King regarded as U.S. assistance to Israel in the development of the port of Elath.
Meanwhile, Israel held firm today in the resolve to send an Israeli-flag ship through the Suez Canal–despite Egyptian warnings against such a step. A spokesman for the Israel Embassy said that Israel “will not be influenced” by a statement issued yesterday by Egypt. The statement warned that any Israel attempt to navigate the canal will cause Egypt to invoke her “right of self-defense.”
