The Ku Klux Klan, will hold its Konclave in Washington, on September 13, 14, and 15, because of Mayor Kendrick’s refusal to permit its taking place in Philadelphia, according to an announcement made by Paul M. Winter, field representative of the hooded organization in this city. Mayor Kendrick at the same time forbade the Klan’s parading through the streets of Philadelphia because he felt that the purposes of the Klan were at variance with the sentiments underlying the celebration of the 150th anniversary of American independence.
This decision, according to Mr. Winter, was reached at a recent meeting of the State leaders of the Klan in Chicago.
Until the decision was made to hold the Konclave at Washington, three hours away from Philadelphia, it was rumored that it would be held in Atlanta, Georgia. Mr. Winter also announced that the Chicago meeting had re-elected Dr. Hiram Wesley Evans to serve as Imperial Wizard for two more years.
A few days before Mr. Winter’s announcement Klansmen at a gathering outside Chester, near this city, had burned a fiery cross and reiterated their intentions of attempting to March in Philadelphia despite Mayor Kendrick’s ban. Whether the action of the nationwide leaders of the order will affect the intentions of these members has not been revealed.
