The Israel Parliament today recessed after adopting bills establishing a Hebrew Language academy and a bill permitting medical students to dissect bodies to study anatomy, which was vigorously opposed by all religious elements.
The bill on the academy saw the Mapai deputies in a public dispute with Moshe Sharett, Acting Premier and leader of the party in David Ben Gurion’s absence. Mr. Sharett insisted on naming the institution Vaad Halashon (Hebrew Language Council) while the other Laborite deputies wanted to name it Hebrew Language Academy.
Mr. Sharett said that academy was a foreign word. The compromise was to provisionally name it the “Highest Institution for the Hebrew Language” and leave the final decision to the body established by the law as the top authority on Hebrew language and grammar.
