The Israel Parliament gave final approval today to a bill authorizing a 40,000,000 pound “Victory Loan” and a “Victory Tax” to be imposed on telephone and transit services and designed to bring in 20,000,000 pounds. The vote on the measure, which was introduced yesterday and rushed through three readings in 24 hours without debate, received the approval of all deputies except the Communist. It will pay the costs of the Sinai campaign.
The Knesset also passed the final readings of a bill authorizing each municipal council to legislate in the matter of the breeding and sale of pork. This was a compromise bill which had enabled the coalition government to continue after a Supreme Court decision invalidating local laws prohibiting the sale of pork, At that time, the religious parties threatened to pull out of the government and disrupt the coalition.
A Communist motion in the Knesset to debate alleged mistreatment of Arabs in the Gaza Strip by the Israel Army was defeated today by a vote of 62 to 3. Only the Communist deputies supported the motion.
During the debate on the motion, Premier David Ben Gurion said that two United Nations observers dispatched by Secretary General Dag Hammarskjold had expressed satisfaction with the measures instituted by Israeli authorities to restore conditions of normalcy to Gaza. He revealed that he had been in Rafah the day after riots earlier this month when Arab mobs, attempting to loot UN relief stores for the Arab refugees, had fired off and subsequently clashed with Israeli troops. Forty-eight Arabs were killed.
