The bill authorizing the Israel Government to float a $500,000,000 bond issue in the United States and other countries was passed at its final reading in Parliament tonight, with only one vote–that of an Arab Communist deputy–cast in opposition.
Israel’s Agriculture Minister Pinchas Lavon acquired 30 coastal fishing craft on his recent visit to the United States and two deep-water fishing vessels, the Ministry’s agricultural development department disclosed today. The new additions to the Israeli fishing fleet are expected to increase its annual catch by 2,000 tons.
A spokesman for the department also disclosed a two-year plan to make Israel self-supporting in agricultural produce. Areas under grain cultivation, he said, will be increased by 250,000 acres. Tobacco growing will be extended by the planting of Virginia tobacco in quantities which should enable this country to export tobacco after two years. A sugar refinery will also be built, he revealed. An area sufficiently large to meet Israel’s entire needs.
