JERUSALEM, March 16 (JTA) — The Knesset has given preliminary approval to an indefinite extension of an import ban on non-kosher meat. In the first of three votes, known as readings, the Knesset approved the amendment to the Basic Law for Freedom of Business Opportunity by a margin of 65-18, with five abstentions. Because the legislation is an amendment to one of Israel’s Basic Laws, which serves in lieu of a constitution, a majority of 61 in the 120-member Knesset was required. The amendment was introduced at the request of the religious parties in the governing coalition.
