A special session of the Knesset, convened today on petition of Opposition deputies, extended for 15 days the period during which Israeli citizens may file appeals for inclusion of their names in the register of voters for the general elections to be held here November 17. The original deadline for the submission of such appeals otherwise would have been today.
Opposition parties pressed for extension of the deadline when it appeared that there would not be time to check all the errors in the election register which was made public last month. They estimated there were about 100, 000 errors in the register–about eight percent of the entire electorate.
The election registers were prepared by automatic machines in the Bureau of Statistics. Thousands of deceased voters were still carried in the lists while thousands of eligible voters were not included. Others appeared with their names misspelled or under wrong addresses. The 15-day respite will give these voters time to file for correction of the registers.
