A bill governing the tenure of office of the President of Israel has been introduced in Parliament. The measure will be debated next week. The bill provides that an absolute majority of the 120-member Parliament is needed to elect a President for a five-year term. The President may be removed from office by the Knesset for malfeasance or if poor health interferes with his handing the duties of the office. He may not leave the country without Parliamentary approval and the Speaker of the Knesset shall replace him as Acting President during his absence.
