The Knesset voted 52-26 to discuss the issue of a national unity government, raised by Premier Menachem Begin today. Begin said he would support such an initiative by the Labor Alignment but accused the opposition of blocking it.
Begin spoke in response to an agenda motion on the subject by MK Avraham Melamed of the National Religious Party. He said that as long as the Labor Alignment stands by its resolution against a national unity government there was nothing that could be done.
Labor MK Haim Barlev asked that the motion be stricken from the agenda. He argued that a national unity government was feasible only when the electorate has no alternative. Labor, he said, offers an alternative.
