Mayor Teddy kollek of Jerusalem said last night that he will accept Vice President Walter Mondale’s invitation to accompany him on a visit to the Western Wall. The crisis is “over,” kollek announced after a meeting with U.S. Ambassador Samuel Lewis.
Earlier, the Mayor had said he would boycott all public events with Mondale because the American party will be visiting East Jerusalem in a private rather than official capacity. The U.S. does not recognize Israeli sovereignty over East Jerusalem. The Vice President issued a statement in Washington late yesterday in which he said that he and his family intended to make a “personal visit” to the Western Wall and “my friend, Mayor Teddy Kollek is welcome to accompany me.”
