Boycott of the “Big Four” packing houses, rather than a sympathy strike, was the decision of the executive board of the Hebrew Butcher Workers’ Union last night.
The board met at union headquarters, 231 East Fourteenth street, to decide whether to call on its 5,000 members to join the city-wide walk-out of meat trade workers.
“We have no grievance against the proprietors of shops which sell kosher meats,” Joseph Belsky, union secretary, pointed out last night. “We do, however, feel that the city-wide strike deserves our support to the extent that we have decided to boycott the Armour, Swift, Cudahy and Wilson companies. The proprietors of shops employing our members are in sympathy with us in this action, since they too have many grievances against the above mentioned firms.”
All future kosher meat purchases, Belsky said, will be made from unionized packing houses. Many dealers are getting their supplies from Philadelphia, where they found prices more favorable
