An ordinance presented under supervision of the rules for first reading at today’s meeting of the City Commission is designed to tighten control of kosher meat shops by the city authorities.
The measure, presented by Mordecai Lipis, lawyer and president of the Newark Zionist District, would prohibit the sale of both kosher and non-kosher meat in the same store unless signs at least four inches high on the windows proclaim that fact, nor would any proprietor be permitted to display a six-pointed star unless he handles kosher products exclusively. A first offense would carry a maximum fine of $200 and not more than ninety days in jail and subsequent offenses call for a maximum $500 fine and a limit of ninety days in jail.
