Discriminatory practices in the local hotel and resort industry and the McCarran Walter Immigration Act, were condemned here at the convention of the New Hampshire State CIO.
In a special resolution, the CIO parley expressed its opposition to “social, economic and education discrimination as inimical to the interests, principles, and foundations of our democratic Nation.” The resolution, which was passed unanimously, decried “the continuance of a discriminatory pattern in the hotel and resort industry of New Hampshire.” It called upon “the State CIO Legislative Agent and our affiliated unions to support such equal opportunities legislation, as may be introduced during the next session of the New Hampshire legislature.”
Prior to consideration of the resolution, Julius Bernstein, Northeast regional director for the Jewish Labor Committee, addressed the delegates and attacked the continuing discrimination in New Hampshire’s resorts. He revealed that groundwork had already been started on an “equal opportunities bill” to be introduced early in the 1955 legislative session and called for CIO support.
