The United States department of labor today granted the request of the Hakoah-All-Stars, the famous Jewish soccer team, to be readmitted to this country following its return from a tour of South America. The appeal had been originally denied because of a decision to discontinue the waiving of the contract labor clause of the immigration law which is necessary in the case of foreign professional athletes.
When it was learned that the Hakoah’s request to be readmitted to the United States had been denied, its counsel, Louis Gribetz, together with a delegation of leading officials of the United States Football Association and the American Soccer League, went to Washington to protest. The interest of Senator Robert Wagner and Congressman Hamilton Fish, both of New York, was also enlisted.
It had been believed that the refusal to permit the Hakoah team to remain here was instigated by a St. Louis soccer team, said to be the one which two years ago lost the American championship to the Jewish players.
