Labor discontent spread today, marked by a sit-down demonstration in the Hedera Town Council office, a threatened general strike in Tel Aviv and the arrest of twelve Jewish workers in Petach Tikvah on a charge of assaulting an employer.
In the Jewish colony of Hedera several hundred jobless demonstrated today and a sit-down was launched in the council office. Yesterday, 50 men and women besieged the Hedera Agricultural Council and demanded that Jews replace Arab citrus workers in Jewish groves. In the evening they were evicted by the police. Thirty-two men and four women were taken into custody, but immediately released.
In Tel Aviv, a meeting of trade union officials and labor members of the Municipal Council protested against the refusal of the city to support the separate school system of the Histadruth Haovdim, Palestine Jewish labor federation, and authorized the Tel Aviv Central Union Executive Committee to call a general protest strike at its discretion.
The twelve workers were arrested in the Petach Tikvah on the complaint of a Jewish citrus grower, who alleged that they had attacked and injured him for not replacing an Arab employee.
